Las Vegas homeowners face unique challenges when it comes to pool maintenance, including extreme heat, desert dust, and hard water. Here are five essential tips to keep your pool clean, safe, and enjoyable year-round:

1. Regularly Clean Your Pool

Why it matters: The desert climate can bring dust, debris, and leaves into your pool, affecting water quality. How to do it:

  • Skim the surface daily to remove debris.

  • Brush pool walls weekly to prevent algae and mineral buildup.

  • Vacuum the pool floor regularly or use an automatic cleaner.

2. Monitor and Balance Water Chemistry

Why it matters: Proper chemical levels prevent algae growth, protect your equipment, and ensure safe swimming. How to do it:

  • Test chlorine, pH, and alkalinity levels at minimum of once a week.

  • Keep pH levels between ideally 7.2 and 7.6 to prevent scaling and irritation.

  • Use stabilizers to protect chlorine from Las Vegas’s intense sunlight.

3. Combat Hard Water Issues

Why it matters: Las Vegas’s hard water can cause calcium buildup on pool surfaces and equipment. How to do it:

  • Clean filters regularly

  • Use liquid chlorine

  • Balance chemicals

4. Maintain Your Pool Equipment

Why it matters: Properly functioning equipment ensures water circulation and filtration, keeping your pool clean and safe. How to do it:

  • Check your pool pump, filter, and heater monthly for any issues.

  • Clean the filter every 3-4 months or as needed.

  • Inspect and replace worn-out seals, O-rings, and other components.

5. Evaporation Maintenance

Why it matters:  Reduce evaporation, keep debris out, and lower chemical use. How to do it:

  • Maintain water level at least half way of the skimmer box

  • You can use a hose timer and set a schedule to add water to the pool or use a autofill if you have one

  • Use a solar cover to retain heat and reduce water loss, it is meant to be used at night.

  • Cover your pool during windy days to prevent dust from entering.

  • Invest in an automatic pool cover for convenience and added safety.
